Birding Spots in Bavaria:

In this section we are going to show you some good birding spots in Bavaria. Since I live near Munich we will start with areas in the vicinity of the Bavarian Capital. If you know an interesting area for birdwatching, mail to spauz@bavarianbirds.de.

Visit also the Bavarian section of our partner website http://www.birdinggermany.de/

1. Starnberger See, southern end.

This might be the best place to see Divers in the interior of Germany. Take the highway A95 south of Munich towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen, leave at exit 7 Seeshaupt. Good places are the "beach" at St. Heinrich, at small yacht haven and campground east of Seeshaupt, in Seeshaupt itself and at Seeseiten (there is a small restaurant with a parking lot).
From October to April you have a nearly 100% chance to see divers, grebes and sea ducks. Although this is the best place it is always worth driving north on the east side of the lake til Starnberg.

2. Isarstauseen

The so-called Moosburger Stausee and Echinger Stausee are reservoirs at the river Isar. The area lies north-east of Munich, best accessed on the highway A92. Take the exit 11 "Moosburg Nord" and go left (coming from Munich) to visit the Moosburger or right to go to the Echinger. Leave the B11 at Viecht and drive towards Eching. Both lakes are very good birding areas throughout the year for all kinds of waterbirds like geese, ducks, waders, gulls and terns. My favourite place to go birding. Reports from the area can be found in the archive.

3. Ismaninger Speichersee

The Ismaninger Speichersee (Reservoir) is northeast of Munich. Leave Autobahn A99 at exit Aschheim/Ismaning, then turn right on the B472, after a bridge over some ponds turn right towards BMW-Testing area. The dam in the north is freely accessible. You can enter the dam from gate of the BAYERNWERK (left of the gate is a small path), or from a barrier between BAYERNWERK and BMW-area or from the dam between the eastern and the western part of the reservoir. The eastern part is especially in the southwest corner of interest. The area offers a good variety of birds and is worth a visit throughout the year!

4. Murnauer Moos

The Murnauer Moos is between the Starnberger See (lake) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the most important area for meadow birds in Bavaria. On the Autobahn A95 (München-Garmisch) take the exit Murnau/Kochel and drive towards Murnau. In Murnau look out for the B2 to Garmisch, directly after leaving the village turn right into a small road (sign: "Ähnderl"). Follow this road to a small church and a very small beer garden. Leave your car at the parking lot and take the only possible route into the Moos. The area is famous for their breeding Corncrakes (best time is late evening in May), Snipes, Whinchats, Stonechats, Scarlet Rosefinch etc... The best time for a visit is late spring.
